Project Transporter

http://transporterproject.blogspot.com/

Overview of project:

The project will allow Suzanne Hutton and Sam Taylor to be artists in residence at
Sachaqa Art Centre (SAC) in Peru and deliver an engagement programme. We will conduct research, create new work and explore sustainability; looking at customs, traditional arts practices and skills and their relationship to the environment. We will spend time with SAC's founders, their resident artists and the local communities sharing skills, knowledge and inspirations in order to develop our own arts practises. From this research and dialogue we will create new collaborative art works whilst working on a variety of other projects in Peru.
On our return to the UK we will evaluate our time, continue to develop work in the studio, curate an exhibition and related talk and deliver a number of creative sessions and presentations to artists and students at The Shed Gateshead, Gateshead College, Newcastle University and International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (The En-compass Project) in order to pass on knowledge and gain feedback on what we have learnt. The idea is that this is the 1st Phase in an ongoing research project to collate information about traditional crafts, skills across the world and compare creativity within cultures, whilst highlighting issues around sustainibility and the environment. There is also a FlickR page set up called 'TRANSPORTERproject' which will hopefully act as an online sketchbook where others can comment on our finds.

Trina Brammah

Trina BrammahTRINA BRAMMAH

Trina Brammah lives in San Roque De Cumbaza, here in San Martin. She is originally from Bradford, England in the United Kingdom.

Through the Sachaqa Art Center, she is working towards a long term goal of creating an Eco Artist Community/School for artists and students from all over the world. The idea is that the artists live, learn, and create while living closely to the natural environment.

This series of paintings originate from her quest for a deeper connection with Mother Earth. The meanings and messages through her work are entirely abstract and open to interpretation. The intension is that we feel the healing properties that pass through the natural materials she uses and images seen in a ´dreamtime´ state.

The earth paints are mostly stones collected and ground from the rivers of Chazuta. The yellow and red in Vida are the original colors used in the Ceramics of Lamas, achote seeds and yellow clay. Black is ground charcoal and the brighter colors - blues and pinks that are often seen in traditional ´Chullos´ of the mountain ´Qeros´ of Cusco - are natural minerals bought at the Pisac market. Trina has experimented extensively with natural plant pigments which have mostly faded in time, the plants that do not fade are leaves of the cocona and achote. The glue that she uses is synthetic as she has not yet found a natural binder that is durable. The shiny varnish is from a sap of a tree found in Chazuta called ´Lacre´ which the Ceramicists use to create a strong layer of protection for their pots after these are cooked in a fire.

Trina believes that we should collect and use materials found in the natural environment where we live. Her goal is not to buy her materials made in factories but to collect and use what is found close to her painting studio in San Roque De Cumbaza.

An exhibition of my art will be held in Lamas, a cultural center in the high amazon of Peru. The art is made from natural paints made out of rocks from the rivers here. I have painted portraits of many of the local people and hope to raise some money from the sales to fund the non-profit Ñawpa Runa who help preserve the traditional arts and medicinal plant knowledge.

This is a very interesting Blog about one of our visitors and her experiences of our San roque family.

'A view here in San Roque.A pleasant river wraps between small mud houses covered in grey Shapaja palm leaves surrounded by the misty mountains of the high jungle. It´s not to hard to like San Roque at first site.'

Bulding the Community house 'Mishky Yacu.' on land
5/15/2011 5:33:46 PM
After three years of waiting for the right piece of land the SAC has finally found the perfect spot to ground our roots.  We have started to build the community house in San Roque De Cumbaza, in community called Mishky Yacu together with the help of community members and WWOOF Volunteers.  We are using Quincha building techniques with the help of local experts.

We began with a stone window seat there will be two window seats in all, i just love to read books sitting at the window. The concrete is not so eco but we are not using much and it does not touch the ground. The stones have to be carried from the river which the community Donkey helps to carry, all very old fashioned, no big trucks here.
